It’s taken a while, but Fakenham Town are off and running in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division after a 2-1 win against Whitton United at Clipbush Park, writes Tony Miles.

Saturday’s victory, the Ghosts first triumph – and points – of the new league season, came at the ninth time of asking. Ashley Jarvis equalised early in the second half before Jake Wiseman struck an audacious curling effort to seal a much-needed triumph.

Player-boss Robbie Harris, who was taking charge of his first game after stepping up to fill the manager’s position that was vacated by Neil Jarvis last week, was quick to praise his predecessor, who rather confusingly to some had been in the Fakenham dugout throughout the game.

“Neil has been brilliant. He came in to help out knowing that with Plumby (Kyle Plumb)unavailable, and Connor Walker having joined Downham Town, I’d be needed on the pitch, leaving me short on the bench,” added the former King’s Lynn striker.

“It was a far from perfect performance but the fact we’ve got the three points is massive. We need to kick on now, and build on it. The lads were punching the air, and got massive applause from the supporters as they left the pitch – they deserved it, and in turn appreciate those that come along to support them.”

Fakenham lost 1-0 at Gorleston on Tuesday night thanks to Peter Lambert’s goal.

The Ghosts are back in action on Saturday when they visit Eynesbury Rovers in the FA Vase second qualifying round. On Wednesday they welcome Swaffham for a league derby.

The reserves’ game at Loddon United Reserves was postponed on Saturday while the ladies suffered a 7-0 defeat at Brandon.
