A point was the order of the day for Fakenham Town at the weekend as they moved into the top half of the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division.

It was a very different opposition to the one that Fakenham faced, and lost heavily to in both games, last season, and the visiting Godmanchester Rovers were quickly on the back foot.

It was the away side that had a penalty claim waved away, leaving management, players and supporters alike incensed after their striker was seemingly wrestled to the ground by a Fakenham defender.

Moments later, and the first booking of the day went to Matt Franks for a challenge which saw several players from each side square up to each other in the centre circle.

Kyle Plumb, again skippering the side, then forced his way into the Godmanchester penalty box, only to see his squared pass come to nothing.

Matt Gilchrist came to the Ghosts’ rescue on the half-hour mark, as he somehow managed to clear the ball off of the Fakenham goal-line.

With the Godmanchester goalkeeper seemingly carrying an injury, Matt Franks tried his luck from distance but could only watch as his shot went wide.

Danny Williams followed Franks’ lead of shooting on sight, and struck the visitors post with his effort shortly before half-time.

The second half began exactly as the first had, with the home side on the offensive and had Danny Smith got a touch on Plumb’s squared ball there could have been an early goal for the hosts.

Sam Garner picked up his third booking of the season after 50 minutes, when he went in a little too heavily on his Godmanchester opponent — again the sides squaring up to each other.

Shortly after, Fakenham took the lead and it came from a well-worked set-piece. An outswinging corner from the right was headed goalward by Gilchrist, and his defensive partner Josh Youngs got his head to the ball and diverted it into the back of the net.

Godmanchester drew level and it took a superb save from Tommy Rix to prevent them from nicking all three points.

The Ghosts, 10th, travel to Ipswich Wanderers in the league on Saturday before visiting lower-level Dereham Town Reserves in the League Challenge Cup on Wednesday.

Fakenham’s reserve side bowed out of the Cyril Ballyn Cup at the hands of Long Stratton Reserves, with Aaron Myhill and Ricky Claxton scoring in a 3-2 defeat.

Narborough are the opposition this weekend in the Norfolk Junior Cup (kick-off 2.30pm).

An opening day Norfolk Women’s and Girls League Women’s Division One 6-0 win on the road got Fakenham Town Ladies off to a great start at Kirkley & Pakefield Ladies.

North Walsham Angels Ladies are the visitors to Clipbush Park on Sunday, with the game kicking off at 2pm.
