Christmas markets are being cancelled as Storm Bert batters the county.

The first festive event was set to return to Pensthorpe, near Fakenham this Sunday with over 80 stalls selling everything from handmade decorations to dog treats.

But now a spokesman for the event has confirmed that following a worsened forecast overnight "it is now unsafe for us to host the event."

A spokesman for Pensthorpe said: "It is with a heavy heart we have made the difficult decision to cancel our Christmas market which was taking place tomorrow.

"The forecast has worsened overnight, and it is now unsafe for us to host the event. Whilst this is devastating for the team after so much effort, energy and cost to get to this point, we will never risk the safety of our stall holder, team and lovely visitors."

Guests who pre-booked their tickets will be automatically refunded and Pensthorpe is set to reopen as usual on Monday, November 25.

A Christmas makers market set for Wroxham Barns this Sunday has also been cancelled following a "predicted forecast of strong, high winds courtesy of Storm Bert."

A spokesman for Wroxham Barns said: "We are really saddened to say, we have taken the decision to cancel our Christmas Makers Market tomorrow.

"With the predicted forecast of strong, high winds courtesy of Storm Bert, our stall holders, staff and visitor safety is paramount.

"This has been a difficult decision to make and we thank all of our stall holders and organisers Apollo Events for their hard work in organising this event."
