A petition to save a £9.9m spending commitment for a new swimming pool in Fakenham has been presented to parliament.

Jerome Mayhew, the Conservative MP for Broadland and Fakenham, presented the petition to parliament yesterday to highlight pleas from locals to ensure the funding is granted and the leisure and sports project can go ahead.

Since the petition began two months ago it has received more than 1,200 signatures.

The swimming pool and a 3G pitch development for Fakenham saw the previous Conservative government pledge £9.9m to the overall £11m project.

However, when Labour took office and brought the spend under review, progress for the project was put on hold.

Mr Mayhew said: "Residents are overwhelmingly supportive of the plans for a new swimming pool and I've been working closely with local Conservative councillors and stakeholders on its delivery.

"We need this petition to show the significant local support for the pool and I'm calling on the new government to honour its promise to Fakenham."
