Members at a racecourse have said they are "being overlooked" after the last meeting there was abandoned.

Those who pay an annual fee to attend meetings at Fakenham Racecourse have expressed their frustration at the high profile cancellation and others, with one member refusing to renew his membership in the new year.

On Friday, the season's opening meeting was cancelled at the last minute due to unsafe riding conditions after several jockeys raised concerns regarding the slippery ground.

People who attended the race were told they could then use their badges to attend any race day either this year or next as compensation or they could claim a 50pc refund.

Between now and November 17, members have the option to renew their memberships for £250 for two, or £160 for one.

Thereafter the cost of a new membership, which runs from January 1 to December 31, will increase to £280 and £175 for a double and a single respectively.

One person who has been a member for three years and asked to remain anonymous, said: "This time last year a race meeting was cancelled after an accident with bad ground, which was declared by the Horse Racing Association.

"The course had four months to prepare for that and then the same thing happened this year. It's just not good enough."

Mel Harbour, who has been a member at the racecourse for several years, says he will not be renewing his membership because "members of the club are overlooked in preference of the day punter".

He said: "We now find there is absolutely no benefit to that loyalty and membership of the Fakenham Racecourse.

"We have many friends who we race with and they are all in agreement they won't be renewing either.

"But people get 100 or 50pc of the ticket price back, while members receive nothing."

However, David Hunter, chief executive officer and clerk for the course, has refuted the claims.

He says members will be able to use their badges at any of the upcoming races either this year or the next.

Mr Hunter has also said the race on October 30 will "categorically go ahead".

He said: "There have been a couple of changes to the course layout that will be confirmed this Friday when the British Horseracing Authority course inspector is coming to see us who will also be at the race meeting next week.

"The same BHA inspector who was at the race meeting and at the stewards enquiry that was held after agreed and recorded that the ground was safe, good ground. The racecourse had prepared the ground perfectly."

With regards to last season's abandoned meeting, Mr Hunter said complementary badges were offered to annual members so they could bring a friend to the races for free.

Mr Hunter said: "We also hosted a reception, a behind the scenes tour and talk by racing commentator and journalist, Derek Thompson, specifically for annual members in late September this year, at which 150 members attended, free of charge.

"The concerns and comments of all our customer groups from our meetings are paramount in my mind."

He also added a meeting with the Fakenham directors has been arranged to agree on actions and a way forward.

Mr Hunter added: "This will also include what we can do for our very loyal and supportive annual members."
