A community group has launched with the hopes of combatting loneliness after finally finding its headquarters.

Fakenham's Community Shed held its grand opening on August 4 at its new headquarters off Norwich Road.

The group plans to host meetings where people can repair, build and work on DIY projects, while meeting others.

Mike Hannah, 57, who is the vice chairman and project manager, said the event was a "good start to what the organisation can do for the community".

The opening has been several years in the making after its chairman, Victor Gerrard, planned to bring the organisation to the market town.

The group is modelled on the Men's Shed organisation, which aims to "repair and repurpose" projects in communities.

"We've been trying to find a spot for the shed for three years," said Mr Hannah.

"Now luckily we've got a brick shed on loan from a private resident.

"Moving forward, we'd like to find somewhere more permanent. We're looking at possibly buying land and then building on it, but those are plans for later on."

For the time being, the group is looking to build its membership base and provide services to 'mend projects' across Fakenham.

Mr Hannah said: "All our labour is free. If you wanted a lawn mower fixed, we could get that done and it would be cheaper than trying to find someone online."

He also said that there are no plans yet for training but this would be something the group looks into as it becomes more established.

"We're here for the community, and we hope to be a huge benefit to Fakenham."
