It was brewed following a trip to London and seeing its popularity on Tik-Tok, and now a family hope its new business will bubble up excitement.
Kelly Thomas from Stanhoe officially opened Bubble Tea by the Sea at Wells Quay on April 29, offering the Taiwan-inspired drink to people on the Norfolk coast.
Mrs Thomas, who owns the Thomas Construction Norfolk along with her husband Neil, had been looking for a side business and landed on the idea after seeing the drink's popularity when on a Christmas trip to London with their youngest son.
“He has been obsessed with bubble tea for quite a while due to Tik Tok, we had to buy bubble tea but every shop we went to was queued out of the door, this amazed me and my husband and it was spoken about for a couple of days after, why was it so popular,” the 43-year-old said.
“The following day, someone had shared a post on Instagram showing the parcel of land that was to become available at the port of Wells, I spoke to my husband and said we could run a bubble tea kiosk.”
Bubble tea is a Taiwanese recipe made by blending a tea base with milk or fruit juice, then adding traditional tapioca pearls or a wide range of flavoured popping ball toppings can be added.
The family were offered the plot six weeks later, she converted an old horsebox and travelled to London to learn how to make the drink, ahead of opening this past weekend.
“I was very nervous about opening as I had no idea how the product was going to be received but it turned into a fantastic day and I didn’t have time to stop,” she added.
Bubble by the Sea is open at Wells Quay from Wednesday to Sunday, 12-5pm.
