Mid Norfolk sports centre bosses have spoken of their disappointment about the impending end of a government support scheme set up to help them cope with spiralling energy costs.

And Huw Edwards, chief executive of fitness industry trade body Ukactive, has called for the Energy Bill Relief Scheme to continue beyond its scheduled end in April.

Mr Edwards said the end of the scheme could put thousands of pools, leisure centres, and gyms in danger of service restrictions, closures and job losses, calling the move an "oversight".

Bryan Gooch, a committee member at the Gallow Fakenham Sports Centre, said continued support with energy bills would be welcomed.

Mr Gooch said: “We do not fear closure. What we do fear is the increasing cost of operations of how we can recover the cost in order to be profitable.”

“If we look at our energy cost, electricity has increased.

"In 2021 it was around £18,000, last year it was up to £35,000 and we fear it will be another 10 grand on top, we have budgeted for it to be £45,000 this financial year.

“With a lower ceiling and insulation in our bowls hall, we have replaced the boiler with a modern efficient one to help as well. We are hoping it will save us 20pc on the energy costs.”

Richard Love, Dereham Leisure Centre manager, said: “The recent announcement does not present an immediate threat to services at Dereham Leisure Centre, we’re naturally disappointed and are urging the government to reconsider its position.”

The centre has worked with Breckland Council throughout the energy crisis to find ways to manage consumption and utilise all available funding to maximise energy efficiency.

Measures the centre has already taken include new pool covers and the installation of LED lighting throughout the centre, which have led to a significant reduction in electricity and gas use.
