Bosses at a community charity which has been operating for two decades say 2022 has been its toughest year to date.

First Focus, based in Fakenham, has seen a huge spike in demand for its services amid the cost of living crisis, while also battling its own financial demons.

The charity, which celebrated its 20th birthday back in August, offers support including a community fridge and access to the internet, while its centre has also become a warm bank thanks to funding from Norfolk Community Foundation.

Clarissa Belson, manager of First Focus, said: "We are seeing a lot of new faces.

"After the last few years with Covid and finally being able to get back together, to being hit with the cost of living crisis and seeing people struggling just to eat and heat their homes, is devastating.

“Somedays I feel so helpless with what we can offer, but at least we're here to offer something, be it food, warmth, a hot drink, support, a smile or a chat. I just wish I had a magic wand.”

The future of First Focus is as least secure for the next six months, but Mrs Belson and her assistant manager, Pauline Hicks, are looking to secure more funding as their energy bills skyrocket.

However, the pair have already been blown away by members of the community, whose support has seen them donate both food and money.

Mrs Belson said donations from the public had been "heartwarming" given the hardship faced by so many people.

Combined with significant grants, First Focus has received the necessary funding to get it through the winter months and beyond.

"I am always blown away by the community support we receive," added Mrs Belson.

"People do care - I see it every day, be it the person who pops in and donates money or food, or those who use the centre regularly and look out for each other.

"Kindness is a strength I see daily. It's what keeps me going."

The First Focus centre, in Oak Street, will be closed over the festive season from Wednesday (December 21) until January 4.

However, staff can be reached via the charity's Facebook page at facebook.com/FirstFocusFakenham or by emailing info@firstfocus.org.uk.
